Living Here
Oconee County is known for outdoor recreation. The wild and scenic Chattooga River- boasting some of the best whitewater rafting and kayaking in the world- assumes the western border of the county. The eastern and southern borders are comprised of three of the most unique lakes in the country. Lakes Jocassee, Keowee and Hartwell hold the head waters of the Savannah River and, with more than 14 species of fish, provide excellent recreational fishing.
Being nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains adds to the allure of Oconee County; with the lakes and the mountains, we enjoy the best of both worlds. If swimming isn’t for you, maybe exploring our award-winning terrain will be just what you’re looking for. With over 150 documented waterfalls, you can spend the entire day getting lost and finding these hidden gems. Not only is our terrain perfect for hiking and biking, but it also drew the attention of National Geographic magazine who named the Jocasse Gorges one of their “Top 50 Destinations of a Lifetime.” Not to brag, but only ONE other location in the United States earned that distinction.
Another benefit of living in Oconee County is our proximity to Clemson University. The impact this Top 20 university, its students and the thousands of Tiger faithful who flock to sporting events has on Oconee County’s economy is immeasurable.
